Racial Fluctuations and Models of Racializationamong Brazilian Immigrants in Toronto, Canada

International migrants move not only across borders but also between different official and unofficial systems of ethno-racial classification. These systems have a contingent and specific historical, social, and cultural formation, directly impacting the experiences of these migrants in the receiving countries. This article aims to analyze the racialization experiences of Brazilians in Toronto, Canada. Through the racialization experience of Brazilian immigrants in Toronto, I seek to analyze how migration processes generally entail translation between distinct systems of ethno-racial classification and models of racialization, which poses significant challenges to the relationship of these individuals with the State and with the societies of origin and reception. Finally, I argue that the Brazilian diaspora is not a monolithic bloc, and that these racial fluctuations are experienced differently by Brazilian immigrants in different contexts, from different origins, and with different ethno-racial self-declarations.
