Abstract

The literature on the extension of political rights for non-resident citizens has had a linear growth, as has its adoption in the international arena. In this article we intend to contribute to the growing number of contributions that, on the one hand, helps to contextualize the Peace Plebiscite of October 2nd, 2016, and on the other, improves the level of understanding about the extraterritorial vote in mechanisms of direct democracy. We work with observational data from a survey conducted in Guayaquil (Ecuador). Findings highlight that Colombian- Ecuadorian citizens are the ones who tend, to a greater extent, to be linked with a symbolic self-identification of political-electoral rights; while those who have an amparo visa and permanent residence are the most critical perceptions to the Colombian government in relation to the peace agreement.
