ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief history, Scope and Policy

The Journal Revista Interdisciplinar da Mobilidade Humana - REMHU (ISSN 1980-8585; ISSN on-line 2237-9843) is a publication of the Centro Scalabriniano de Estudos Migratórios – CSEM, from the Scalabrinian Missionary Sisters of São Carlos Borromeo. The journal has adopted the rolling pass modality since 2024 and publishes academic articles on original field or theoretical research related to the topic of international migration, human mobility and refuge, and its diverse aspects.

The objective is to offer - to the academic world, intellectuals, migration policy makers and pastoral workers - an interdisciplinary analysis on themes associated to contemporary human mobility at an international level.

REMHU, based on the mission of CSEM, favors the circulation of knowledge and studies which support and promote human rights of individuals and groups in mobility.

Until December 2005, the CSEM Journal was published with the title “Scalabriniane nel mondo”. It was a biannual publication on the socio-pastoral work of the Missionary Sisters of San Carlos Borromeo, Scalabrinians at the service of migrants and refugees in different countries and realities.

From 2006, the CSEM started publishing the Revista Interdisciplinar da Mobilidade Humana, REMHU with the current characteristics.

The abbreviated title of the journal is REMHU, which should be used in citations, footnotes, and references.

Open Science Compliance

REMHU endorses the principles of Open Science, allowing free access to all articles (open access), accepting the publication of preprints, encouraging the availability of programme codes and other materials underlying published articles (Open Data and Open Materials) and gradually promoting the transparency and openness of the manuscript evaluation process (Open Peer Review).

Ethics in Publication

REMHU, Interdisciplinary Journal of Human Mobility, aware of its academic and social responsibility as a scientific journal, affirms its commitment to ethics and the quality of its publications, from submission to publication of texts, according to the principles contained in the Codes of Ethics of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development.

The “Guidelines on Editor, Authors and Reviewers' Responsibilities”, “Identification of Malpractice” and “Guidelines for Action” are explained in detail in the REMHU Code of Ethics (see Publication Ethics | Revista Interdisciplinar da Mobilidade Humana (csem.org.br).

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

REMHU accepts manuscripts previously deposited on a Preprint Platform, provided they have not been submitted to peer review in another journal simultaneously. In this case, the author will need to communicate it to the editors at the time of submission, complete and attach the Open Science Compliance SciELO-Preprints form with the files submitted for evaluation and must inform their online location (link, DOI etc.). REMHU will adopt gradually the Open Peer Review process, following the criteria stipulated by the publications covered by SciELO.

Peer Review Process

The journal REMHU publishes national and international contributions (Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian, and French) with the objective of making available interdisciplinary studies and in depth analysis about themes related to contemporary human mobility at an international level, such as, migrations, refugees, human trafficking, displaced persons, migration policies and legislation, assistance and monitoring of people in mobility, pastoral care, theology of migration, among others.

The Journal includes research articles, review articles, as well as communications, essay, discussions, pastoral reflections and book reviews on human mobility or similar themes.

Manuscripts are selected for publication based on: the relevance of the theme, the quality of the scientific methodology, the originality and consistency of the results, the analytical accuracy, the coherence of the conclusions, the pertinence, relevance and timeliness of the bibliography, and adequacy to the editorial guidelines and scope of the journal.

All the manuscripts submitted to the journal are screened by the editor in chief, who initially examine the adequacy of the work to the editorial line and scope of the journal, as well as absences of plagiarism. The texts that pass through the screening are subsequently evaluated and reviewed by two or more referees who are experts on the theme and do not have access to the authors name, which guarantees the anonymity of the entire revision process, except those previously made available in preprint servers. After that, the Editor will send the Editorial Decision. Manuscripts may be a) accepted, b) rejected, c) accepted with corrections or d) a new submission can be requested. The accepted manuscripts are then sent back to the authors for approval and for the inclusion of the necessary corrections. The authors should resend the paper with the necessary corrections and justify, in an attached letter, why, if be the case, they do not agree with the suggested corrections. The evaluation process, from submission to editorial decision, should not exceed 130 days.

In line with Open Science, authors may opt, when offered the choice, for one or more means of opening the peer review process in agreement with the referees, following the Open Science Compliance Form: a) mutual opening of identities in the evaluation process and b) publication on the journal's platform of the evaluations of approved articles with the optional identification of the referees.

Following the open science policy, the name of the responsible editor for the evaluation and editorial process is published in all articles.

Open Data

From the perspective of valuing Open Science, REMHU encourages the deposit of research data in Data Repositories that provide DOI. We recommend the use of SciELO Data, a multidisciplinary repository for deposit, preservation and dissemination of research data, linked to Dataverse, of which REMHU is part since 2022. However, other repositories are also accepted by the journal, including: Havard Dataverse; USP's scientific data repository.

By research data we mean "factual records, which may take the form of numbers, symbols, text, images or sounds, used as primary sources for research, and that are commonly accepted in the research community as necessary to validate research findings" (Griffith University). We therefore encourage the sharing (open or closed), citation, and referencing of data, code, and materials underlying the article and used in the design and conduct of the research (research design, software, program codes, scripts, algorithms, methodologies, field notebooks, questionnaires, audios or videos, photographs, ppt presentations, and others).

Data sharing should occur after the acceptance of the article.  In some cases, REMHU may request access to the databases of the submitted article during the evaluation of the manuscript.

For data sharing at SciELO Data please refer to the Guide for the deposit of research data, produced by the SciELO team.

If research data is made available in repositories, include the citation in the reference list (see Submission Guidelines).

REMHU also requests the completion of the Open Science Compliance Form - SciELO (model in the link) and its inclusion at the time of manuscript submission.

Fees

REMHU does not charge fees for article submission and evaluation.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

The Journal adopts the definitions and criteria of misconduct from COPE, Committee on Publication Ethics and the Guide to good practices for strengthening ethics in scientific publishing by SciELO, especially with regard to fabrication and falsification of data and information, including plagiarism, self-plagiarism, improper attribution of authorship and misuse of Artificial Intelligence tools.

If the article has been submitted to an Ethics Committee (CEP/Conep System, Plataforma Brasil or other system), we ask the authors to mention it in the body of the article (for example, in a footnote).

Plagiarism Checker and CopySpider software are used to identify misconduct. Manuscripts that do not comply will be automatically rejected, with the authors subject to possible sanctions determined by the Editorial Board.

REMHU uses the SciSpace tool to detect content generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the use of text-generative AI for autonomous authorial content production is prohibited.

If there are any errors in the publication, which do not constitute misconduct, regardless of their nature or origin, they will be corrected through the publication of an errata. Authors should contact the editors via email: remhu@csem.org.br. If there is evidence of misconduct, a retraction may be required from the authors of the articles, according to Scielo Brasil's Guide for registering, marking and publishing retractions.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

REMHU requests that authors and evaluators declare possible conflicts of interest when submitting or evaluating a manuscript. These conflicts can be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. In case of doubt, authors and evaluators must include this information when submitting and accepting an article evaluation.

Privacy Policy

Names, addresses or other information of authors and reviewers reported in this journal will be used exclusively for the purposes of publication and will not be available for other purposes.

Adoption of Software and Use of Artificial Intelligence Resources

REMHU follows the guidelines of COPE and SciELO Brazil regarding the use of software and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.

Technical resources and AI tools do not meet authorship requirements and, therefore, cannot be listed as authors of submitted manuscripts.

The authors of the articles may use AI tools for spelling and grammar review, image and graphic production, or bibliographic research. However, it is mandatory to report in the methodology section of the article, in detail, the type of tool used and its purpose.

The use of AI for the production of autonomous authorial content is prohibited. The responsibility for the authorship of the text lies with the author, including the parts produced with the assistance of AI.

Gender and Sex Issues

The editorial team of the REMHU, in addition to the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and results and interpretation of findings.

REMHU observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board and selection of referees. Furthermore, it suggests reading the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research, available at: https://www.scielo.br/j/ress/a/qbkGJtSD7Cj4fzJSrVsg6Hf/?lang=pt.

Copyright and Intellectual Property

The authors of REMHU articles maintain copyright and grant the magazine the right of first publication, with the work simultaneously licensed under the Creative Commons License of the BY attribution type, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, as long as it is recognized authorship and that the original work is correctly cited.

Authors are allowed to self-archive their accepted manuscripts, publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media, as well as posting them on their personal social media, as long as the full citation from the original journal version is included.
