Being in the field, engaging the mobile lives of West African migrant youth involved with the most varied universes of musical practice in Brazil, led me to ask what is the meaning of performing music cultures in the contingent and precarious contexts of mobility. The sound and musical dimension are significant in multiple ways in people’s lives and intersects a real world affected by inequalities, diseases, conflicts and displacements. It also becomes a valuable resource for action in these situations. This article is based on a case study that follows the mobility paths and agencies of a youthful Senegalese in Brazil, and it explore how the African sabar percussion, its transnational circulation and transformative flows, inform performative imaginaries of mobility that are activated by West African youth as a creative source for emancipatory solutions, mobility paths and agency in foreign contexts such as Brazil.
